Apologetics 101

Deception and Definition
Peter J. DeRosa — Oct. 14, 2003

  1. Origins in the Word.
  2. The Original lie.
  3. Creation and Calvary.

Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day . . .”

John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without him nothing was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”

Hebrews 1:10 “. . . You Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.”

It has become increasingly more important to understand our origins, because the battle over “being,” or rather “existence,” rides on the philosophical and theological implications of our origins.

An old lawyer’s adage is, “He who defines wins.” I believe this is especially true in the hearts and minds of men. “. . . Indeed let God be true and every man a liar . . .” Romans 3:4.

The battle over our origins is not a battle over who has the best scientific answer to all the questions, but rather, a war over the Personage of God and His right to rule the universe!

From the first day our great adversary dared to defy God, evolution was born. From this, Satan tempted and deceived Adam and Eve, using the lie of evolution.

Genesis 3:4-5 “Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’”

The promises of evolution are: supreme knowledge and (eventually) to evolve into a god. The lie, “You will be like God knowing good and evil,” sums up the whole of evolutionary thought. Thus we see the tactics used by Satan.

“Christianity has fought and still fights science over evolution. Because evolution utterly destroys the supposed reason Jesus’ earthly life was supposedly made necessary, destroy Adam and Eve and original sin and in the end you will find the sorry remains of the Son of God.” American Atheist Journal 1979

The enemy understands the importance of Genesis to the Gospel message. If you deny God as our Creator, you also deny God as our Redeemer.

Thus the battle over Genesis is a battle over the integrity of the Word of God and must be granted no safe haven in the Church. If the Bible is in error in the beginning, where else is there conflict with modern science? If man can decide what God really meant in Genesis by cutting out the Powerful Presence of Almighty God, is man now god and able to judge life and death, right and wrong, good and evil? Certainly not!

Man is a created subject of God, created in the image of God. The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. Not to dethrone Him!

Certainly some critics would say I am blowing this out of proportion. But my own opinion does not matter. God’s Word says “1) Beloved, I write to you this second epistle in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder, 2) that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandments of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3) knowing this first; that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lust, 4) and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.’ 5) For this they are willingly ignorant: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6) By which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7) But the heavens and the earth, which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the Day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” (2 Peter 3:1-7)

“For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.” Romans 6:23

Once plunged into the curse of sin, man quickly realized that life apart from God is unbearable and impossible. So God’s promise of a Messiah, to redeem His chosen people brought new life. Evolution through the denial of God permeated the pre-flood society. The weight of sin grew so that God had to purify the earth with a flood. All perished except Noah, his wife, and their three sons and their sons’ wives.

In the New Testament we see the foundation of Genesis and the fulfillment of prophecy, the good news of salvation through Christ Jesus and the hope of the new earth to come. Some Christians have tried to prioritize the scriptures from least to greatest; in doing so, these Christians often place Genesis last. But all of scripture rests on the presumption that Genesis is true. The very need for a savior is made known through the fall of man in Genesis. All the books of the Bible following Genesis fill in the story of the people of God and His promises and His love for them. These rich testimonies of the lives of the people of God give us insight and understanding in the ways of God.

To attempt to separate any one part or message of the Bible from the rest is undermining the fact that God gave the whole of scripture from Genesis to Revelation as His words to us. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

On the other hand, if man did not need a savior — and this is what evolution and all other theories with beginnings contrary to the Word of God means — then our very salvation is on the line! We in the church cannot allow these tenants of the faith that God created all things in six literal twenty-four hour days, and rested on the seventh day to be compromised. The Bible as a whole rests on the presupposition that God is the creator and sustainer of all things.

Creation science is not just about more scientists with different opinions from the majority. We are fighting the heart of the battle, in the long war against God. So, we see that all the issues Christians fight against, from abortion to sodomy and the host of evil in between, stem from the lie of evolution.

But there is hope. The war is already won, and God is still on the throne and the true church is standing to fight compromise.

Sure, digging dinosaurs is fun. But the real reason for the work is to inspire the next generation to rise up and defend the faith, and to teach the truth of God’s word wherever they are.
